ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin University women's tennis team clinched a berth in the MIAA Tournament with a 7-2 win at Trine University in Saturday's conference finale.
The Knights started strong, taking two of three doubles contests to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The number-one team of
Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Chartine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won their match 8-2, while the number-three team of
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and
Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community) won 8-5.
The Knights capped off the win by taking five of six singles matches, all in straight sets.
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) led things off in the top spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win, followed by Schellenboom (6-0, 6-0) and Grissom (6-0, 6-1) on the numbers two and three positions.
Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) won 6-3, 6-0 in the fifth match, and Ganop closed the line-up with a 6-0, 6-3 win.
Calvin improved to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in MIAA play with the win. Trine dropped to 10-6 on the season and 2-3 in league matches in defeat.

John Ross said. "It's really good for us to clinch a spot in the MIAA tournament. We have one final tune-up next week now before we reach the conference tournament on April 26."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Tuesday, April 18, when it plays at Spring Arbor in a match scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
