SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - The Calvin University women's tennis team battled to a 5-4 defeat at the hands of Spring Arbor on Tuesday in a non-conference match that marked the end of the regular season.
The Knights started well as the team of
Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won their number-one doubles match 8-4, while the number-three team of
Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community) and
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) won 8-6.
Spring Arbor won the number-two doubles match 8-2, but Calvin led 2-1 going into singles.
In singles play, Shoemaker won her number-four match in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, and Grissom overcame dropping the first set to win in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
The Knights could not find that fifth point in the other four matches, however, as Spring Arbor took the numbers one and two matches in straight sets, and held off
Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Ganop in third-set tiebreakers to secure the win.
Calvin fell to 12-7 on the season in defeat. Spring Arbor improved to 13-8 with the win.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We had a tough road loss against a strong opponent today," Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross said. Give Spring Arbor credit for winning two of the three singles tiebreakers. We're looking forward to traveling to Kalamazoo next Wednesday for the MIAA semi-finals."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action next week, when it plays in the MIAA Tournament semi-finals at Kalamazoo.
