Calvin Men's Tennis Improves to 4-1 in MIAA with 8-1 Win at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin University men's tennis team continued its impressive run in conference place with an 8-1 win at Trine University on Saturday. 

The big win started in doubles, where the Knights swept all three matches. The closest competition came in the number-one match, where the team of Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won 8-7 thanks to a 7-4 tiebreaker win to close the match out.

The number-two team of Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) won 8-6, while the number-three team of Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi) and Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) completed the sweep with an 8-3 win.

In singles, the Knights took five of the six matches, including four in straight sets.

Kim led off the line-up with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win, and Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the number-two spot.

Broek (6-4, 6-3) and Warners (6-2, 6-3) won in straight sets in the numbers four and six spots, respectively, while Johnston dropped the second set but came back to win the third to take his number-five match 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

Calvin improved to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in MIAA play with the win. Trine fell to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in league play in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "That was a solid MIAA win on the road for our team," Calvin head tennis coach John Ross said. "It was good to continue our recent strong play to improve our place in the standings leading up to next week's match against a very strong Kalamazoo team."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis will return to action Saturday, April 22, when it hosts Kalamazoo in a match scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
