Calvin Women's Tennis Stops Albion 9-0

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin University women's tennis team swept the Britons from Albion University 9-0 on Wednesday to even their MIAA record at 3-3 on the season.

The Knights were in control from start to finish, as they swept all three doubles matches before winning all six singles contests in straight sets.

The number-one team of Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) swept the Britons 8-0 in doubles, as did the number-three team of Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community). Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won in number-two doubles 8-2.

In singles, Holman (6-1, 6-3) won in the number-one match, and Schellenboom (6-0, 6-1),Grissom (6-2, 6-1), Shoemaker (6-1, 6-0), Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) (6-0, 6-0) and Ganop (6-0, 6-0) followed down the line-up to complete the sweep.

Calvin improved to 11-6 on the season and 3-3 in MIAA play with the win. Albion fell to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in league play in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I was happy with our effort today," Calvin head tennis coach John Ross said. "Albion has a good group of young ladies and we played well. We're looking forward to another league battle with Trine on Saturday."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Saturday, April 15, when it plays at Trine University in the MIAA finale in a match scheduled to start at 11:00 AM.
