GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's lacrosse team rolled to a 15-4 victory over Northwestern University of St. Paul Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Stadium.
The Knights are now 3-3 on the season.
Calvin led 9-0 at halftime and never looked back. The Knights added three unanswered goals in the third quarter before settling in for the final quarter of play which provided some back-and-forth action in the final minutes.
Senior
Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) scored an unassisted goal 48 seconds into the match and then assisted on a goal by junior
Robert Miner (Littleton, Co./Columbine HS) two-and-a-half minutes later to get the scoring started.
Senior
Josh Newhouse (Grand Junction, Co./Palisade HS) then scored two late first quarter goals to put the Knights in command after one.
Calvin's five-goal outburst in the second quarter was highlighted by a pair of long-range snipes from sophomore
Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) that found the back of the cage.
Sparling finished with four goals while Smith had three. Newhouse had two goals while freshman

Christian Coler (Ionia, NY/Honeyoye Falls-Lima HS) had one goal apiece. Newhouse also had three assists while

Greg Gould (Castle Rock, Co./Lutheran HS) had two assists apiece.
On the defensive end, junior
Ethan Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) was a game-changer with four caused turnovers.
Sparling had seven ground balls and won four of five faceoff opportunities.
Cole McKenney also had five ground balls.
Calvin held a 46-23 shots at goal advantage. Junior
Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Il./Hononegah HS) had six saves in three quarters of action in goal for the Knights with sophomore
Carter Sherman (Ada, Mich./Lowell HS) and freshman
Soren Thiemann (Plano, Tx./Plano Senior HS) splitting time in goal in the fourth quarter with Thiemann collecting four saves and Sherman one save.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great bounce back win today for the guys," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach
Dave Hoger. "We are excited to get some actual practices in the rest of this week as we prepare for a stretch of great opponents coming up on the schedule."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Lake Forest College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. (CST) start.
