Calvin Men's Lacrosse Chops Down Lake Forest 13-11


LAKE FOREST, Il. – Calvin ran its win streak up to two games with a 13-11 victory over Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon.

The Knights are now 4-3 on the young season.

Calvin led 8-5 at halftime and held off a late Lake Forest (5-2) charge to claim the win.

The Knights held a 12-8 fourth quarter lead but the host Forresters closed to within a goal at 12-11 with 7:21 remaining.

Sophomore Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla./Oviedo HS) then provided the clinching goal for the Knights, scoring with 3:46 remaining to give Calvin a two-goal cushion.

Sophomore Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) had three goals and three ground balls to lead the Calvin charge. Sophomore Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Ca./Trabuco Hills HS) also had a big game with a goal and three assists.

Senior Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) had a terrific all-around game with two goals, three assists and five ground balls.

Griffith had a pair of goals. Senior Robert Miner (Littleton, Co./Columbine HS) had a goal and six ground balls. Sophomore Josh Moyer (Laurys Station, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic HS) and senior Ethan Curtis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) also had one goal apiece.

Junior Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Il./Hononegah HS) went the distance in goal for the Knights and collected 10 saves.

One of the two goals by Sparling came in a man-up advantage situation, marking his 17th career man-up goal, moving him into a tie for first place on the Calvin career list with Joel Schaefer who hit the same mark from 2014-2017.

COACHES COMMENT: "Great team win today," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "We played well in all facets of the game and took the next step forward. We are excited for a couple days off after a physical game and are looking forward to our test next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Aurora University next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eagles Stadium.
