Calvin Women's Tennis Drops Match to Kalamazoo 6-3

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin women's tennis team lost its match to Kalamazoo College 6-3 on Saturday at Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

Kalamazoo (7-5, 3-0 MIAA) started strong, taking the top two matches in doubles by the scores of 8-4 and 8-4, but Calvin (8-4, 1-1 MIAA) was able to capture one point with an 8-2 win by the number-three doubles team of Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community).

In singles play, the Knights' Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won her number-four match 6-4 and 6-1, while number-six Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) also won in straight sets 6-3 and 7-6 (7-3).

Calvin played the other matches close, but both Shoemaker and Ganop fell in three sets as the Hornets were able to hold on for the win.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I thought this was a really good match today," Calvin head tennis coach John Ross said. "I thought we played and competed well, but unfortunately it just wasn't enough to come away with a win against a really strong Kalamazoo team. Hopefully we'll get an opportunity down the road to play them again in the conference tournament. I'm happy with our performance today, but we've got to get back to work to get ready for a tough St. Mary's team on Wednesday."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's tennis will return to action on Wednesday, March 29, when it plays at St. Mary's in a match scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
