LISLE, Ill. - The Calvin University men's lacrosse team scored twice late to overcome a fourth quarter deficit and defeat Benedictine (Ill.) 10-9 on Saturday.
Robert Miner (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) scored the first goal off an assist from
Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) just 69 seconds into the game to put Calvin (5-4) ahead early, but the teams traded goals back and forth until Benedictine (0-7) finished the opening quarter with a 4-3 lead.
The Knights started to take control in the second quarter with four unanswered goals (including three in man-up situations) to take a 7-4 lead, but the Eagles closed the gap with a goal late in the second period to cut the Calvin lead to 7-5 at the half.
Calvin finished the first half 4-4 in man-up situations, with
Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) scoring two of those four goals.Â
The Eagles played well to start the second half, cutting their deficit to 8-7 after three quarters, and then adding two more goals early in the fourth quarter to take a 9-8 lead with 9:42 to play.Â
Miner came up with the equalizer for the Knights with 4:51 remaining to tie the game 9-9, and
Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi) scored the go-ahead tally with 1:43 to play.Â
After the goal, Benedictine pressured the Knights as it attempted to force overtime, but Calvin was able to kill off a 60 second penalty, and goalie

Miner finished the day with four goals on eight shots, while
Josh Newhouse (Grand Junction, Colo./Palisade) and Coler each scored twice.
