ELMHURST, Il. – Calvin dropped a 15-7 non-conference decision at Elmhurst University Wednesday evening.

The Knights are now 5-5 on the season.

Elmhurst (8-1) scored the first five goals of the game to take the early momentum.

Calvin picked up a late first quarter goal from sophomore Christian Coler (Ionia, NY/Honeyoye Falls-Lima HS) to close to within four.

The Knights closed to within three at 6-3 on goals from sophomore Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) and senior Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) but Elmhurst scored with 12 seconds left in the half to take a 7-3 lead into intermission.

Trailing 8-3, Calvin used early third quarter goals from Josh Newhouse and Coler to make it an 8-5 game but Elmhurst ended the third on a 5 goal run to lead 13-5 heading into the final frame.

Calvin later picked up fourth quarter goals from Josh Gage (Grand Junction, Co./Palisade HS) and Coler.

Coler led the Calvin attack with three goals. Freshman David Blackmon (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) and sophomore Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills HS) both had an assist.

Gage and junior Ethen Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) had six ground balls apiece with Boelens causing two opponent turnovers. Freshman Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) also scooped up five ground balls.

Hanson was 12 of 23 on faceoff opportunities.
