GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team opened its 2023 MIAA campaign in winning fashion, defeating Adrian 8-1 Wednesday afternoon at Calvin's Strikwerda Tennis Courts.
The Knights improve to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.
Calvin took all three doubles points to take the early momentum.
Freshmen
Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) continued their strong play, winning 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and freshman
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) were 8-3 winners at No. 2 doubles. Junior
Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) and junior
Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) claimed an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin clinched the win by winning five of the six singles flights.
Warners made quick work of Sean Ruhf 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Junior
Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ryan Cuddy at No. 2 singles. Broek was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Whitman Hopper at No. 4 singles.
Freshman
Emmanuel Henao Estrada (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior) claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Luke Holowinski at No. 3 singles.
Sophomore
Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) picked up the last singles point, defeating Zachary Perry 6-2, 6-3.
COACHES COMMENT: "It's always good to get a win in your league opener," said Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross. "We've had several great matches against Adrian over the years so we were prepared for a hard-fought contest and our guys responded well. I'm pleased with the effort and the performance. The goal is to continue the momentum moving forward."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Spring Arbor on March 31 in a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m.
