Calvin Men's Tennis Suffer Close Defeat at Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Calvin University men's tennis team played its final non-conference match before next week's MIAA opener in a close 6-3 defeat to Bethel (Ind.) at South Bend Raquet Club. 

In doubles play, the number-three Calvin team of Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi) and Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) scored an 8-2 win, but the Knights dropped the other two matches in tie-breakers 8-7. The number-one team of Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) dropped their tie-breaker 7-4, while the number-two team of Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) and Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) fell 8-6 in the tie-break.

In singles play, Kim won his number-two match in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7), while Broek won in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) in number-six singles.

Three of the four other matches went to Bethel in straight sets, while Warners took his number-five match to a third set in a defeat by the scores of 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).

Calvin fell to 6-3 on the season in defeat. Bethel improved to 5-3 with the win.

NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis will return to action on Wednesday, March 22, when it hosts Adrian in a match scheduled to start at 4:00 PM.
