Calvin Baseball Drops Two at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Calvin University baseball team could not contain the bats of Wittenberg University in a pair of losses on Thursday by the scores of 11-2 and 15-3.

Game 1

The Tigers showed off their power at the plate early on the way to taking game one 11-2.

Wittenberg jumped in front early with a pair of two-run home runs in the opening inning off Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville), and then added another solo home run in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.

The Tigers' offense continued to roll with a five-run fourth frame to push their lead to 10-0. The Knights were able to get on the board with one run in the sixth and another in the eighth, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Doyle (1-2) took the loss after allowing 10 runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. The Calvin bullpen of Calvin Miller (Fremont, Mich./Fremont), Kyle Koning (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian), Ryley Reynolds (Meridian, Miss./Russell Christian Academy) and Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) combined to allow one run on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Offensively, the Knights were led by Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) with three hits, while Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) and Will Mueller (Aurora, Ill./Matea Valley) each finished with two hits apiece.

Game 2

Wittenberg continued its strong offensive showing on the way to a 15-3 win in seven innings in game two to complete the sweep.

The Tigers' offense once again started strong, scoring eight runs in the first three innings and knocking Calvin starting pitcher Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins) out of the game after two-plus innings in which he allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks.

The Knights got on the board in the fourth inning with a Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) sacrifice fly and added another in the fifth with a Brown RBI-double, but the Tigers answered with two runs in the fifth and five more in the next two innings.

The Brown led the Calvin offense with three hits. Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) added a pair of hits, while Reynolds fell to 2-1 on the season on the mound in defeat.

Calvin fell to 6-8 on the season following the two losses, while Wittenberg improved to 6-5 with the two wins.

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Wednesday, March 22, when it travels to Manchester (Ind.) for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
