NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Calvin University baseball team took home one win at Manchester (Ind.) on Wednesday in a rain-shortened doubleheader. The Knights won game one 6-0, and also led game two 4-1 in the fourth inning before it was called due to inclement weather.
The Knights won the opener with the help of a season-best performance from junior starting pitcher
Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville), who improved to 2-2 on the season after throwing 6.1 shutout innings.
With Doyle taking care of matters on the mound, the bats did more than their share of work in the win.
Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach),
Nate Mason (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) and
Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) each recorded two hits in the game.
Gillen's two hits were both doubles and resulted in one run driven in (RBI). Penn also drove in one run with a pair of singles, while Mason's two hits included one double.
The Knights started the second game strong, with
Alex Owen (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns) looking sharp on the mound with one run allowed through three innings, while Gillen (2-2 with one double and two RBI) and Penn (1-2 with one RBI) providing the offense until the game was called.
Calvin improved to 7-8 on the season with the win. The Spartans fell to 8-7 in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT: "
Ian Doyle pitched an outstanding game, and we had some timely hits as we scored in the last four innings," Calvin baseball coach
Kevin Van Duyn said. "
Patrick Gillen led the hit parade with three doubles on the day. I thought
Alex Owen was throwing well before the second game was called, as well."
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action this weekend, when it plays three games at the Wheaton Invitational hosted by Wheaton College. The Knights will face Concordia-Moorhead (12:00 PM) and Hope (3:00 PM) on Friday, March 24, before facing Wheaton on Saturday (3:00 PM).
