GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's lacrosse team moved to 2-1 on the season with an 8-5 win over visiting Concordia (Wisc.) Saturday afternoon at Eagles Stadium.
Calvin fought through cold conditions to pull away for the win. Fourth quarter goals from
Christian Coler (Ionia, NY/ Honeyoye Falls-Lima and
Josh Newhouse (Grand Junction, Co./Palisade HS) gave the Knights the cushion they would need to seal the victory.
Calvin led 4-3 after on quarter of play, using a pair of early goals from Newhouse and single goals from
Cole McKenney and
Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla./Ovideo HS) to build an early lead.
The second quarter proved to be a quiet one with the only goal of the quarter coming from Coler on a feed from junior
Ethan Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS).
Concordia (1-1) scored midway through the third quarter to cut the deficit down to 5-4 but Calvin senior
Ethan Curtis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) scored unassisted in the closing minutes of the quarter to put the Knights back up two at 6-4.
Cole then hooked up with
Cole McKenney (Mission Veijo, Ca./Trabuco Hills HS) to put the Knights up 7-4 midway through the fourth and Newhouse followed with a man-up goal less than a minute later off an assist from senior
Robert Miner (Littleton, Co./Columbine HS).
Calvin finished the game with a 36-25 shots at goal advantage.
Junior
Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Il./ Hononegah) had nine saves in goal for Calvin with sophomore
Carter Sherman (Ada, Mich./Lowell HS) also coming up with a save off the bench.
Newhouse led the scoring attack with three goals to go with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Coler had two goals, an assist and five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Boelens also had a big day with six ground ball and causing three turnovers.
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Southwestern University of Texas on Tuesday for a game scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
