Calvin Women's Basketball Prepares to Face Pair of Opponents in Pacific Northwest

Grand Rapids, MI – The Calvin University women's basketball returns to action this Friday and Saturday when it travels to Oregon for a pair of non-conference games. Calvin will face George Fox University Friday at 6 p.m. (PST) in Newberg, Oregon. On Saturday, Calvin will travel to the campus of Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. The Calvin-Pacific game will also take place at 6 p.m. (PST).

The Teams: Calvin, George Fox and Pacific. Calvin enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-5. George Fox is 1-7 while Pacific enters the weekend at 5-4. George Fox has played a rugged early-season schedule which includes Division II opponents Western Oregon and Seattle Pacific and NAIA Warner Pacific as well as Division III No. 14 Hardin-Simmons. George Fox and Pacific are both members of the Northwest Conference. Pacific was picked third in the NWC preseason coaches' poll while George Fox was picked fifth. Calvin shared the No. 4 spot in the MIAA preseason coaches' poll.

The Coaches: Mark Christner is in his fifth season as head coach of the Calvin women's basketball program. He has an overall record of 68-35 at the helm of the Calvin women's basketball program including a nationally-ranked, 21-win campaign last winter. George Fox is under the direction of first-year head coach Lauren Howard who was a standout player for the Bruins from 2013-15 and later served as the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Portland under former George Fox head coach Michael Meek. Pacific is led by sixth-year head coach Alecia Parker. Parker has amassed a won-loss record of 73-50 at Pacific. She has led Pacific to back-to-back 19-8 campaigns which includes appearances in the NWC Tournament Championship game in 2022 and 2023. As a player, Parker was a four-year letterwinner with the University of Montana Western women's basketball team where she also served as a three-year captain.  

The Players: Calvin is led in scoring by junior point guard Emma Witte who averages 12.2 points and 2.5 rebounds a game. She was named to the DePauw Invitational All-Tournament Team earlier this season. Sophomore forward RyAnn Rohrer is next, averaging 8.9 points and 7.0 rebounds a game for the Knights. George Fox is led in scoring by senior Erin Yoshitake who averages 10.8 points and 3.3 rebounds a game with junior Alyssa Wells averaging 9.5 points and senior Ella Roberts 9.3 points a game. Pacific is led in scoring by graduate student Brilie Kovaloff who contributes 15.2 points and 4.1 rebounds a game with graduate student Sydney Gray averaging 10.5 points and 4.6 rebounds a game.

Recent History: Calvin has met George Fox once, falling to the Bruins 78-63 in the national quarterfinals in 2015. Calvin and Pacific have never met before in women's basketball.
