GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The 11th-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team advanced to the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament with a 3-0 sweep of The University of Olivet on Tuesday by the scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22.

Calvin (21-6) started strong on the attack, hitting .483 in the opening set thanks to five kills from Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and four more from Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) as the Knights won the set 25-14.

Olivet (12-12) made things more difficult for the Knights in the second set with five blocks, but Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) recorded five kills to lead Calvin to a 25-17 set-two win and a 2-0 overall lead.

The Comets continued to fight in the third game as the two teams traded the lead back and forth eight different times (with 15 ties). With the teams tied 20-20 late in the second, Baker came through with three kills in the final seven points to push the Knights over the finish line for the 3-0 sweep.

Baker recorded nine kills in the third set and finished with a match-high 17 kills to go with a .438 attack efficiency and 12 digs.

Kellogg joined her in double figures with 10 kills, while Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) and Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) each finished with 13 digs.

Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded 36 assists and two blocks for the Knights, who finished the match hitting .330 as a team.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I think we had a faster tempo and we controlled the serve and pass game," head coach Dr. Amber Warners said. "We had some little glitches here and there, but that happens. I was happy with the way we held our composure in the last set."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball advanced to the MIAA Tournament semifinal, where it will face Albion College on Friday, November 10. The match will be played at Hope College and is scheduled to start at 4:30 PM.
