Calvin Volleyball Beats Albion to Secure Spot in the MIAA Tournament Final

HOLLAND, Mich. - Tonight the third seeded Calvin University women's volleyball team beat Albion in the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament in four sets (25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-16).

The Knights (21-6, 6-2 MIAA) came out with a vengeance as they went on an 8-3 run to start the first set. As play went on Albion (18-10, 7-1 MIAA) fought back with a run of its own to bring itself within a point but it wouldn't be enough as Knights never let go of the lead and took the set 25-22.

Albion took a quick lead in the second set and, despite two lead changes throughout the set, the Brits were able to hold on to win 25-18.

In the third set ,Albion once again came out strong and kicked things off with a 7-3 run to take the early lead. As the set went on the Knights inched closer and closer before tying things up at 17-17. From this point Calvin doubled down and won the third set 25-22 to take the 2-1 lead.

As the fourth set got underway the Brits once again took a quick lead. However, the Knights quickly worked their way back in front and showed dominance from that point on. They won the set 25-16 and picked up the 3-1 win over Albion to advance to the MIAA Tournament Finals.

Calvin outhit the Brits .230 to .215 and racked up 10 service aces compared to Albion's 6.

Sophomore Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) led the attack for the Knights with 14 kills and Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) contributed 13 kills. Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) and Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) each had 9 kills.

Baker also led Calvin in digs with 21 while Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) had 18 digs.

COACHES COMMENT: "I thought we did a really nice job of coming out to play right from the start," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "When we had that blip when we gave up several points I think we did a good job of keeping our composure and coming back from that. Sometime this year we haven't been able to do that so we talked about slowing the game down and not being so frantic and I think that really helped. I'm proud of their serving and their passing which helped us get into a good tempo tonight."

UP NEXT: The Knights will compete in the MIAA Tournament Finals tomorrow at 5PM against rival Hope at DeVos Fieldhouse.
