GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin University women's basketball team used a strong start to defeat the Scots from Alma College 70-55 on Saturday at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin (11-3, 4-2 MIAA) jumped out to a 13-3 lead early in the game and never looked back as they led 21-14 after the first quarter and 41-25 at halftime.Â
Leah Harris (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) scored six points in the opening quarter, while
Sydney Cleary (Middleville, Mich./South Christian) led the Knights with 11 points on 4-5 shooting (3-4 from beyond the three-point arc) in the first half.
Alma (4-10, 2-3 MIAA) tried to battle its way back into the game as it out-scored the Knights 15-10 in the third quarter, but Calvin never allowed its lead to fall back into single digits as it secured its fourth straight conference win.
After shooting 57.1 percent in the first half, Calvin finished the game shooting 48.3 percent while holding the Scots to 34.4 percent and forcing 14 Alma turnovers.
Gabby Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as she continued her season-long climb up the Calvin record lists by moving into second place in program history with 1,040 career rebounds. She passed Lisa Winkle (1,034) for second on the all-time list, and trails Carissa Verkaik (1,071) by only 31 rebounds for the all-time record.
Four players finished in double figures for the Knights, as Cleary and Harris each scored 13, while
RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) added 10 points to lead a bench effort that out-scored the Scots 17-5 for the game.

Mark Christner. "I thought we did a nice job of making plays for each other and we got the stops we needed when we needed them. Important week upcoming for us to improve with no game on Wednesday."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's basketball returns to action on Saturday, January 14, when it travels to Adrian for a game scheduled to tip off at 3:00 PM.
