Calvin Women's Basketball Defeats Adrian 73-48

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin women's basketball team topped Adrian College 73-48 on Saturday to stretch its winning streak to four games.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth 16 times in the first half, but Calvin (12-3, 5-2 MIAA) began to pull away with a 7-1 run to end the second quarter, capped by a tough lay-up by Leah Harris (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) at the halftime buzzer.

Gabby Timmer (Caldeonia, Mich./South Christian) led the Knights with 13 points in the first half to go with six rebounds and three assists. The Knights moved the ball well offensively, assisting on 11 of 16 field goals and shooting 47.1 percent from the field.

The Knights continued to stretch the lead in the second half and opened the third quarter on a 16-7 run. Seniors Timmer, Harris and Sydney Cleary (Middleville, Mich./South Christian) combined to score all 16 points for the Knights in the third quarter, which ended with Calvin holding a 53-41 lead.

Calvin would put Adrian (6-10, 2-5 MIAA) away in the fourth quarter, holding the Bulldogs to just 1-12 shooting from the field while shooting 57.1 percent (including 3-4 from beyond the three-point arc) on the offensive end on the way to the win.

The Knights stepped up their game on the defensive end in the second half as the Bulldogs shot 25.0 percent and committed nine of their 17 turnovers.

On offense, Timmer led the Knights with 24 points and 10 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Cleary continued her stellar shooting start to 2023 (11-15 from beyond the arc in her last three games) with 14 points, while Harris and Alyssa Karner (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) each scored 11 points. Karner's 11 points set a new career high and led a bench effort that out-scored the Bulldogs 22-15.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Today's game was one where our team got better as the game wore on," Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner said. "Our defensive effort was strong in the second half, and we had a nice life off the bench from RyAnn (Rohrer), Sophie (Sensenig), Emma (Witte) and Alyssa (Karner). This is not an easy place to play and our starters handled the game with resilience and experience."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, January 18, when it hosts Kalamazoo College at 6:00 PM.
