Gabby Timmer Claims Calvin Career Rebounding Record

With her team holding a 31-28 third quarter lead, Calvin senior Gabby Timmer hauled down an Adrian miss and whipped a quick outlet pass. The pass connected with longtime friend and teammate Sydney Cleary who broke free for a fast-break layup while drawing a foul that led to an old-fashioned three-point play and a 34-28 lead. The three points by Cleary were key. The rebound by Timmer that led to the play however, was historic.

The rebound by Timmer marked the 1,072nd carom of her career, allowing her to pass Carissa Verkaik and become Calvin's all-time career rebounding leader. Timmer continued on to add two more rebounds in Calvin's eventual 61-47 win, boosting her career total to 1,074.

"I knew that the record was coming up but when they announced my named during a timeout I wasn't sure what it was about at first," said Timmer. "It is such an honor to do it at home. I was hoping to do it here so that made it even more special."

She is now one of two players in her family to rank in the top five on the Calvin career rebounding charts as older sister Anna sists in fourth place after snaring 785 boards from 2013-2017. "My sister was always one of my idols, someone I looked up to," said (Gabby) Timmer. "I wanted to play college basketball just like she did and to pass her is just unbelievable to me."

Passing Verkaik on the all-time list was also not lost on her. "Carissa was an amazing player and I never thought I would be in a position to pass her," said Timmer. "She was also one of my basketball idols growing up and that makes this even more special."

The play that led to Cleary's fast-break basket off of Timmer's rebound was rich in history as the two players have been teammates since their high school days at South Christian High School.

"We have played together for about seven years," said Timmer. "To enjoy this tonight with one of my best friends playing the game that we both love is awesome."

Calvin head women's basketball coach Mark Christner offered words of congratulations for the career accomplishment. "Congratulations to Gabby on a terrific career milestone," said Christner. "We've had some great players here at Calvin and Gabby ranks right up near the top. The rebounding piece is significant on both ends of the floor. My staff and I are so grateful to have the opportunity to coach her."

Timmer is one of three South Christian High School graduates to rank in the top five of the all-time Calvin rebounding list with Lisa Winkle third (1,034) and her sister Anna Timmer fourth (785).  A fourth South Christian graduate – Kerry Walters – ranks ninth on the Calvin career carom list with 616 rebounds.

The Calvin victory helped the No. 20-ranked Knights improve to 16-3 overall and move to 8-2 in league play. The Knights are now tied with Hope (8-2) for second place in the MIAA standings with Trine in first at 8-1.
