Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Calvin Men's Soccer Downs Holy Cross College

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Calvin traveled to NAIA foe Holy Cross College on Tuesday for a non-conference contest and came away with a 3-1 win to improve to 7-1-2 overall.

The Knights led 3-0 at halftime before conceding an early second half goal. The Knights then fought off strong winds over the final 35 minutes to claim the win.

Senior Colin Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) put the Knights on the board in the 16th minute of play, banging in a pass from senior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). The goal was the first of Iverson's Calvin career.

In the 26th minute, junior Zach Flowerday (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) ran on to the pass of freshman Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) and slipped a shot in for his first goal of the season.

Just before halftime, senior Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) headed in a corner kick from freshman T.J. McVey (Aurora, Il./Benet Academy) to give the Knights a 3-0 advantage.

Holy Cross got on the board in the 55th minute as Alex Valenzuela was able to snag a loose ball and get loose for an open shot and goal to make it 3-1.

Calvin made its two-goal advantage hold up the rest of the way however as the Knights claimed the victory.
Calvin finished with a 21-17 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore Kaelen Matascastillo got the start in goal for the Knights and the full 90 minutes, recording three saves.

COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to get a win on the road," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Certainly some good things can be taken from today. We also need to improve on some others. Holy Cross has some talented players and made us uncomfortable at times. Coach Gallo is a good friend and a great coach that I respect a lot. We're excited to get back home this Friday to play to celebrate some of the great Calvin teams from the past. Hoping it'll be an awesome atmosphere."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Concordia of Wisconsin on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field in front of a Calvin Homecoming Crowd. As part of the evening, Calvin will welcome back and honor the members of its 2009 and 2011 teams that finished as national runners-up.
