Calvin Men's Soccer Celebrates Homecoming With Shutout Win Over Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 11th-ranked Calvin men's soccer team celebrated Calvin Homecoming with a 4-0 win over Concordia (Mich.) Friday night at Zuidema Field.

The victory capped a celebratory evening for the program as Calvin welcomed back members of its 2009 and 2011 teams that finished as national runners-up.

The Knights (8-1-2) led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of a first half goal by sophomore Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day School) in the 22nd minute. The play began with a chip into the box by freshman Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) that was headed to the center of the box by senior Colin Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS). Senior Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) was able to get a second head on the ball from Iverson with the headed second pass falling to the feet of Goodling who banged in his third goal of the season.

Calvin outshot Concordia (1-7-0) 19-4 in the first half with the Cardinals threatening once on a shot at the near post that Calvin senior goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) smothered.

Calvin opened the second half with intensity and broke through for a second goal in the 47th minute as Muhumuza headed in a cross into the box from junior Kadin Shaban (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) for his second goal of the season.

Just 16 seconds later, senior Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) dribbled his way through a pack of Concordia defenders after a receiving a return pass from the ensuing kickoff and slid a shot past an onrushing goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead.
Schau added his second goal of the game and seventh of the year three-and-a-half minutes later, getting loose near the top of the box and sliding a shot inside the far post.

Calvin cruised from that point to claim its first shutout victory of the season.

Wunder went the full 90 minutes in goal to post the shutout win. The Knights held a 40-4 shots at goal advantage.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was great to post a shutout in front of a homecoming crowd," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "We were also so pleased and honored to welcome back the members of our 2009 and 2011 national runner-up squads. Great to have the coaches and players that have contributed so greatly to the tradition of our program.  It means a lot to have the support of our Calvin men's soccer alumni and I know our players were energized to have them at Zuidema Field tonight. Now it's time to rest up, regroup and get ready for a very challenging MIAA opener next Wednesday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Trine next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the MIAA opener for both schools. The game will feature a rematch of last year's MIAA Tournament Semifinals which was won by Trine 1-0 in overtime.
