Calvin Men's Soccer Beats Blue Streaks in Barnburner

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Oh. – The No. 10 Calvin men's soccer team got back on the winning track in dramatic fashion with a 2-1 victory at John Carroll University Saturday evening inside Don Shula Stadium.

Senior Chris Schau's header off a long throw-in with just 3:49 left in regulation proved to the winning goal as the Knights fought off a spirited John Carroll side.

Junior Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) gave Calvin (6-1-2) a 1-0 advantage with a goal in the fifth minute of play. Akintade moved into scoring position with a move through the left wing, cut back inside near the six-yard box and cranked a right-footed blast that beat John Carroll goalkeeper Brenden Moher to the center of the goal.

John Carroll (4-3-1) regrouped at halftime and played on the front foot for nearly the entire second half, peppering the Calvin defensive third with attacking runs. The Blue Streaks finally broke through in the 68th minute as Logan Penton ran onto a contested cross into the six-yard box and deflected a shot past on-rushing Calvin goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).

John Carroll then pushed for the go-ahead goal before the Knights pushed the ball back up field late and earned a throw-in along the right wing.

Senior Mason Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) then launched a seed of a throw-in that dropped into the thick of the John Carroll penalty area. Senior Colin Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) was able to get a head on the ball to send it further into the box. With a leap and a quick twist, Schau redirected the Iverson header at the top third of the goal with the ball flying over the out-stretched hands of Moher and into the net. The Schau strike gave Calvin a stunning 2-1 lead and the Knights were able to hold on over the final 3:49 to gain the huge regional victory.

Calvin held a 9-8 shots at goal advantage with Wunder picking up two saves for the Knights and Moher five saves for the Blue Streaks.

COACHES COMMENT: "A great gritty win on the road," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I'm extremely proud of these guys. We were a little short-handed tonight but our guys gave it everything they had in a very difficult road environment. A credit to John Carroll. That's a very talented team and we feel very good about getting this one with a bit of magic at the end. We'll enjoy this for a day, regroup on Monday and get ready for another pair of challenging games next week."
