CHICAGO - The Calvin University volleyball team lost 3-2 to the Maroons of University of Chicago on Wednesday by the scores of 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-13, 17-15.
The Knights (8-3) took leads after the first (25-23) and third (25-21) sets, but Chicago (9-5) answered each time by winning the second (25-16) and fourth (25-13) sets to force a fifth and deciding game.
In the final set, the Knights appeared to be in control with an 11-7 lead and had three separate match point chances in the late stages, but the Maroons would answer each time, tying the match 15-15 and then winning the last two points to secure the win.
The Knights hit .222 on the attack, but the Chicago front row proved formidable with 15 blocksÂ
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) led Calvin with 20 kills to go with 23 digs, while
Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) joined her in double figures with 10 kills.
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led all players with 34 digs.
Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded 47 assists for the Knights.
NEXT UP: Calvin volleyball will open MIAA play with a match at St. Mary's (Ind.) on Saturday, September 24, starting at 1 PM.
