NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Calvin University volleyball team opened conference play with a 3-0 win at Saint Mary's by the scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-13.
The two teams went back and forth throughout the first set to open the match, but the Knights closed strong with a kill by
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) to win 25-23.
Calvin settled in after taking the first set, building big leads in each of the second and third games on the way to a 3-0 sweep.
The Knights hit .188 in the opening set and got better as the match went along, hitting .192 in the second and .371 in the third set.
The big leads in the final two sets allowed 13 players to see action in the match and eight players accounting for at least one kill.
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) led the attack for Calvin with 10 kills, while
Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and Bos added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Calvin improved to 9-3 on the season and 1-0 in MIAA play with the win. Saint Mary's fell to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in league play in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT: "I thought we played tight in the beginning and once we relaxed we played well," Calvin volleyball head coach
Amber Warners said. "It was nice to get other players in to see them contribute on the floor."
