GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin women's soccer team jumped in front early and never looked back on the way to a 2-0 win over Wheaton College on Tuesday.
The Knights opened the scoring in the first minute as
Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) found herself alone in front of the goal 46 seconds into the game and buried her shot in the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) headed the ball to Judd off a Calvin throw-in to create the open opportunity.
Calvin continued to press in the first half and was rewarded in the 21st minute with a goal by
Tatum Goodling (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day), her third tally of the season. Goodling was once again alone in front of the net and after a rebound to push the Knights' advantage to 2-0.
Wheaton threatened in the first half with 10 total shots (five on goal), but was held in check in the final 45 minutes. The Knights held the Thunder to only three total shots and one shot on goal in the second half, and finished the game out-shooting the Thunder 23-13 overall and 11-5 in shots on goal.
Calvin keeper
Kalex Dodge (Jackson, MIch./Leslie) stopped four of the Thunder's five shots on goal, while also getting help from her defense to stop one shot from reaching the back of the net. The clean sheet was Dodge's seventh straight to open the season.
The Knights improved to 7-0-0 on the season with the win. Wheaton fell to 1-4-1 in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT:Â "We're happy to get the win," Calvin head women's soccer coach
Emily Ottenhoff said. "I thought Wheaton was good tonight and played with a lot of effort. They did not make it easy on us and we expected that. It was good to get that early goal and the early momentum. We are still growing as a team but we will take this result. It's back to work tomorrow to get ready for last non-conference match and then the league season comes at us fast."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's soccer will play its final non-conference tune-up on Saturday, September 24, when it travels to Anderson (Ind.) for a game scheduled to start at 3:30 PM.
