Calvin Volleyball Sweeps Day One of Labor Day Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin volleyball team opened the 2022 season with a pair of 3-0 wins at its Labor Day tournament against MSOE and Wheaton on Friday.

Calvin (2-0) won the afternoon match against MSOE (0-1) by the scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-14, and then took the night cap against Wheaton (0-2) by the scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-13.

In the opener, the Knights were little slow out of the gates, but got stronger as the match went on to put the Raiders away in three sets.

Calvin hit .305 on the attack against the Raiders, led by 12 kills and a .364 attack efficiency from Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian). Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished with nine and eight kills, respectively.

First-year setter Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) recorded 38 assists, while Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the team with 12 digs.

The Knights also saw a number of newcomers get their first collegiate action led by outside hitter Jasmine Savoi (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), who finished with three kills and one block in one set of action.

Westra once again led the way for the Knights in the second match against Wheaton, finishing with 20 kills and two service aces.

DeVries (33 assists) and Wrubel (16 digs) also led Calvin in the same categories in the second match.

COACH'S COMMENT: "It was really good to get some matches in and some actual game points in," Coach Amber Warners said. "I think we started off pretty jittery and nervous and played a little tight. I think throughout the night we got more relaxed. We had a huge following from Chaos Day and the crowd was really, really fun. I think that perked us up."

NEXT UP: Calvin will close the Labor Day Tournament at Van Noord Arena tomorrow (Saturday, September 3) against Concordia-WI at 3 p.m.
