Calvin Volleyball Tops CUW 3-0 to Close Labor Day Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin University volleyball team was tested against Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) on Saturday, but came up with the right answers when it mattered to win 3-0 by the scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-22.

The Knights dominated the first set 25-15 with the help of five kills from Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Falcons responded in the second game and kept the Knights at a deficit heading into the final stretch, but Calvin overcame a 21-19 deficit by winning six of the final seven points of the set to take a commanding 2-0 overall lead.

CUW continued to battle in the third set, but Kellogg and Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) each recorded five kills, including the set-clinching kill from Kellogg to end the match.

Kellogg and Westra both finished with 12 kills to lead all players in the match, while Tori Roskamp (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) added six kills without an error to go with three blocks.

Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) finished with 21 digs to lead all players, while Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added 30 assists and 10 digs.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I was really proud of how resilient we were," head coach Amber Warners said. "There were several times where they had a string of points and we just didn't give in. It was a really good test for us to be able to work through some things through adversity."
