Women's Soccer Tops University of Chicago 2-0

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin women's soccer team continued its hot start to the season with a 2-0 win over University of Chicago at Zuidema Field on Saturday.

The Maroons, who entered the game ranked 13th in the latest United Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll, nearly jumped in front in the 15th minute off a free kick from just outside the box, but Calvin keeper Kalex Dodge (Jackson, Mich./Leslie) made the save and her back line cleared the ball away from the goal before any damage could be done.

The Knights started to take control from there and were finally rewarded with their first goal in the 35th minute on a header from Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) off a corner kick from Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian) to take a 1-0 lead.

Calvin continued to build on that momentum, and four minutes later added another goal on a penalty by Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) to take a 2-0 lead into the half.

The Maroons controlled possession for much of the second half, but the Knights' back line did not break. Chicago finished the half with eight shots, but recorded only one shot on goal as Calvin closed out the win.

Dodge finished with two saves in the match as she and the Knights recorded their sixth straight shutout to open the season.

Sophie Mueller (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) led all players with four total shots and three shots on goal.

Calvin improved to 6-0-0 on the season with the win. The Maroons fell to 4-2-0 in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Chicago's a really good team," Calvin women's soccer head coach Emily Ottenhoff said. "We were prepared. We knew that they were going to come in and be really tough. They have so many good, talented players, and I'm pleased with how our group stuck to what we asked them to do."
