Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Comes From Behind Again, Tops Millikin 2-1

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin men's soccer team continued its early season trend of overcoming halftime deficits with strong second halves in a 2-1 win over Millkin on Wednesday.

The teams went back and forth to start the game, but the Big Blue started to gain momentum as the first half went along and were rewarded with a goal in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

The Knights came out looking for the equalizer to start the second half and finally found it in the 73rd minute when Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored unassisted off a turnover outside the box to push the teams level at 1-1.

Calvin continued to ride the momentum of that goal, culminating in Chris Schau's (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) game-winning goal in the 79th minute off an assist from Mason Smith (Flint, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic). The goal was Schau's fourth of the season and his second game-winner.

The Knights continued to push in the final 10 minutes for an insurance tally, as Akintade found the post in the 83rd minute and another chance in front of the net was sent high, but the one-goal edge was enough to secure the win for Calvin.

After Millikin controlled play for parts of the first half and held an 8-6 advantage in shots at halftime, the Knights out-shot the Big Blue 11-2 overall and 5-0 in shots on goal in the second half.

After out-scoring Millikin 2-0 after the break, Calvin has now outscored its opponents 11-0 in the second half this season.

The Knights improved to 5-0-1 on the season with the win. The Big Blue fell to 0-3-1 in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I'm relieved, to be honest," Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders said. "We didn't show up at all today. Credit to Millikin, they fought tooth and nail and gave our group problems. They probably earned more from the game than they got. Glad we found a way to get the three points. We're going to have to look inward as we move forward in hopes of becoming what we want."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's soccer returns to action on Saturday, September 17, when it hosts Cornerstone in a game scheduled to start at 7 PM.
