Calvin Men's Soccer Gains 2-2 Draw With Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw with Cornerstone University Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.

The visiting Golden Eagles (3-0-3) used a penalty kick goal with 3:35 left in the match to level the score 2-2 and withstood a last-minute Calvin secure to come away with the draw.

Calvin (5-0-2) outshot Cornerstone 30-10. Cornerstone goalkeeper Ethan Pike came away with 13 saves however while the Golden Eagles pounced on a loose ball to punch in a tying goal with 19:30 left in regulation and then got a second equalizer with the late penalty kick.

After knocking on the door, Calvin broke through for the opening goal in the 34th minute of play as a long pass into the box set up senior Mason Smith (Flint, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) who sent a back-pass to freshman Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) that Ryu buried into the far corner of the net past the out-stretched hands of Pike.

Calvin continued to threaten to widen its lead in the second half but was stunned with 19:30 remaining when a defensive miscue led to a loose ball in the box that Cornerstone freshman Tyler Corstange popped into the back of the net to level the match 1-1.

Just 69 seconds later, Calvin regained the lead on a throw-in by Smith that was headed into the far corner of the Cornerstone net by sophomore Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, NC/Covenant Day School) to give the Knights a 2-1 lead.

Calvin appeared poised to push through for the win when the Golden Eagles stunned the Knights again with a long counter-attack pass that allowed Corstange to rush into the Calvin goalmouth. Corstange was bumped to the ground in the box on the play and a penalty kick was awarded. Corstange took the subsequent penalty kick and rifled a shot into the top shelf to tie the game 2-2.

Calvin proceeded to come up with three shots on goal in the closing three minutes but Pike came up with three straight saves as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

NEXT UP: Calvin will host the University of Chicago next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
