WAUKESHA, Wisc. – The Calvin women's soccer team polished off a perfect weekend with 2-0 win at Carroll University Saturday afternoon.
The victory came on the heels of a 6-0 win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh Friday afternoon as the Knights improved to 4-0-0 on the season.
Calvin broke a scoreless deadlock in the 26
th minute as junior
Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS) was able to break through the Carroll back defensive line off a well-placed pass by freshman
Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian HS). Mueller slammed home the goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Carroll appeared to tie the game on a cross in the box late in the first half but the goal was waved off as the ball was judged to have curved out of play before coming back into the Calvin goalmouth.
Calvin held possession through the opening moments of the second half and then scored the clinching goal in the 59
th minute as sophomore Lindy Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) ripped home a shot after coming in off the bench earlier.
Carroll (2-1-0) was able to mount only two shots at goal during the second half as the Knights came away with the win.
Calvin outshot Carroll 11-8 with sophomore goalkeeper
Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie HS) picking up the shutout in goal, collecting four saves.
COACHES COMMENT: "Huge to get a (winning) result today against a tough Carroll side," said Calvin head women's soccer coach
Emily Ottenhoff "Carroll threw a lot at us but credit our group for finding ways to put the ball in the goal and compete until the final whistle. Looking forward to some rest tomorrow before we begin preparing for another challenging week ahead."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Manchester University next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.
