Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Calvin Women's Soccer Wins Opener 2-0

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Calvin women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 shutout at Heidelberg on Thursday.

The Knights were in control from the start and jumped on the board in the 14th minute on Elizabeth Williams' (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) penalty kick goal to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Knights outshot Heidelberg 16-1 in the first half and didn't allow a shot on goal until the game's 50th minute, but Heidelberg was able to keep the score 1-0 late into the second half.

In the 83rd minute, Williams struck again for her second goal of the game off an assist from Kaitlyn Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian) to put the game away.

Calvin finished with a 31-4 edge in total shots and recorded 20 shots on goal while allowing only two.

Keeper Kalex Dodge (Jackson, Mich./Leslie) recorded her first collegiate shutout in her first appearance for the Knights, stopping the only two shots she faced.

COACHES' COMMENT: "We're always pleased to get a result," said Calvin head women's soccer coach Emily Ottenhoff. "It wasn't our best performance, but Heidelberg played hard and made things difficult for us. We'll get back to work as we prepare for a tough IIT team on Saturday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Illinois Institute of Technology for the home opener on Saturday, September 3, at 3 p.m.
