For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin freshman Maggie Shoemaker has been named MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week.

A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Shoemaker helped Calvin gain an 8-1 win over Alma last week as the Knights cemented third place in the MIAA regular season standings and the No. 3 spot for this week's four-team MIAA Tournament.

In the win over Alma last Wednesday, Shoemaker was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 3 doubles. She also teamed up with Grace Brown at No. 2 doubles for an 8-6 win.

Shoemaker helped the Calvin women's tennis team improve to 16-2 overall in dual match play this season and more importantly to 6-2 in league play.

As the No. 3 seed for the MIAA Tournament, Calvin will journey to No. 2 seed Kalamazoo on Thursday for a 5 p.m. MIAA Tournament semifinal match.
