GAME ONE
Calvin 12, Adrian 5
Calvin picked up a wild game one win, outlasting the Bulldogs despite committing four errors.
Adrian scored in the first to take a 1-0 lead but the Knights answered with four runs in the bottom of the first with senior Addi Warners (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) delivering a two-run RBI triple to right in the early uprising.
Adrian scored a run in the second and added two unearned runs in the third to tie the game 4-4.
Freshman Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) put the Knights back in front 5-4 with a booming solo home run to right field. Junior Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) added a sacrifice fly in the inning to give the Knights a 6-4 lead.
Adrian came back with a run in the top of the sixth to trail 6-5 but the Knights answered with six runs to build a 12-5 lead. Warner had a two-run RBI single while senior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) and sophomore Grace Glass (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) had run-scoring singles. Junior Kali Yant (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Duong brought in another with a bases-loaded walk.
Adrian placed its first two runners on board in the top of the seventh but Calvin closed out the game on back-to-back flyouts to center with Biddlecome racing down wind-blown balls on the warning track. Duong finished the game by making a shoe-string snag on a line drive to short.
Warner had two hits and four RBI's. Duong, Sanborn and Glass had two hits apiece.
Junior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) went the distance in the circle for the Knights to pick up 13th win against only four defeats. Krause struck out six and walked only one while scattering eight Adrian hits. Three of the runs she allowed were unearned.
GAME TWO
Calvin 7, Adrian 3
Calvin jumped on the Bulldogs for four runs in the top of the first inning and held the lead the rest of the way to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Sophomore Maddy Meredith (Portland, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) had a strong complete-game pitching performance, striking out six against three walks while scattering eight hits.
In the first, Calvin used an Adrian error to bring home its first two runs and then received a run-scoring single from freshman Kennedi Pepin (Bourbannais, Il./Bradley Bourbannais HS) and a sacrifice fly by freshman Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) to build a 4-0 lead.
Pepin later boomed a two-run RBI double into the left-center gap to give Calvin a 6-1 lead and moments later came home on a single by Glass to make the score 7-1.
Adrian (10-24 overall, 4-10 MIAA) came up with two runs in the bottom of the third but Meredith was able to get out of the inning with a strikeout and a lineout to first that doubled off a base-runner.
Meredith picked four straight scoreless frames the rest of the way to get the win and up her season record to 4-2.
Warner and Pepin had two hits apiece as Calvin outhit Adrian 9-8.
COACHES COMMENT: "We are happy to pick up two more conference wins against a scrappy Adrian team," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "In game one we were very tentative on defense instead of attack each ball hit our way which resulted in too many unnecessary errors. Offensively we dialed in. Getting six runs in the sixth inning was huge in order to put the game way. In game two, I felt Maddy really competed well in the circle and had great composure in a few situations with runners on and made a huge double play to stifle their opportunities late. Overall we look to finish our conference season strong tomorrow against a very good Kalamazoo squad."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo for a key conference doubleheader on Friday with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
