Box Score 2 Calvin swept a doubleheader from the University of Chicago on Monday to bump its season record to 23-9. Calvin won the opener 3-2 and then exploded for a 14-2 game two win that was limited to five innings due to the run rule.
GAME ONE
Calvin 3, Chicago 2
Calvin once again rode the right arm of junior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) for a game one win.
Krause (12-5) limited the visiting Maroons (15-14) to three hits while striking out two and walking two.
Calvin grabbed a 3-0 lead, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Freshman Kennedi Pepin (Bourbannais, Il./Bradley Bourbannais HS) scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch in the second inning after leading off with a single, moving to second on a sac bunt by sophomore Ally Schultz (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville HS) and then taking third on a wild pitch.
In the third, senior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single to center by senior Addi Warner (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS).
In the fourth, Biddlecome drove in sophomore Grace Class (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) who had reached base earlier on a fielder's choice.
Chicago put a scare into the Knights with a two-out rally in the sixth, using a walk, single and throwing error to bring home two unearned runs. Krause was able to bear down to get out of the inning on a foul-out down the left field line.
Chicago placed the tying run on second base with two outs in the seventh but Krause came up with a game-ending groundout to second to seal the win.
Biddlecome and junior Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit Calvin attack.
GAME TWO
Calvin 14, Chicago 2 (5 innings)
Calvin erupted for 13 hits and 14 runs to finish off the doubleheader sweep of the Maroons. Calvin scored four in the first, one in the second and nine runs in the fourth to put the clamps around the victory.
Chicago grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, using a leadoff home run and back-to-back doubles to put the Knights on their heels.
Calvin struck back for four runs in the bottom half with the key blow coming on a two-run homer to right into the teeth of a strong wind by freshman Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS). The home run was the second of the spring for Sanborn.
Duong ripped an RBI double in the second to put the Knights up 5-2.
In the fourth, Calvin used six hits and four Chicago errors to put up nine runs. Duong had a bases-loaded triple in the inning while Warner had a two-run RBI single as well.
Biddlecome went 4-for-4 at the plate while Duong was 3-for-4 with four RBI's. Warner drove in three runs. Sanborn also had two hits.
Sophomore Maddy Meredith (Portland, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) went the first four innings to get the win, upping her season record to 3-2. Freshman Josie Vink (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) came on to toss a scoreless fifth to complete the win.
COACHES COMMENT: "Great to get two more wins on our home field," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "I really thought we were pretty flat and our energy was low in game one but found a way to get the victory. I really challenged our squad between games to embrace the moment and pick up our energy in game two. I thought our response offensively in the bottom of the first really was fantastic after we gave up two quick runs in the top of the inning. After that we stayed aggressive and didn't let up. Game two was much more indicative of the kind of team we have been most of this season, doing the little things in the moment and competing both offensively and defensively on every pitch."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Adrian on Thursday in a conference doubleheader with game one set to start at 3 p.m. with the Knights set to honor their senior class during the afternoon.
