Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Calvin hit the 20-win plateau for the seventh time in nine years by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Anderson Saturday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Calvin won the opener 8-0 in six innings and game two by a 7-2 score. The Knights are now 21-9 on the season.
GAME ONE
Calvin 8, Anderson 0 (6 innings)
Junior Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) belted a pair of three-run homers to lead the Knights to the six-inning run-rule win.
Duong belted a rare inside-the-park homer in the second, driving a sinking line drive to right-center that got away from a diving centerfielder. Duong's belt went to the wall and plated sophomore Grace Glass (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) and freshman Sage Mougin (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie HS) who had singled earlier in the inning with Duong racing around the bases and beating the throw home. Mougin had singled moments earlier to give Calvin a 2-0 lead. Duong's inside-the-parker gave Calvin an 5-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Glass singled. Duong followed with a towering drive to left that sailed over the fence for her fourth home run of the season and ended the game by the run rule.
Duong went 2-for-4 at the plate with six RBI's while Glass went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Junior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) was stellar in the circle, striking out five and walking only one while scattering three Anderson hits. The shutout was the third of the season for Krause (11-5) who lowered her earned run average to 0.99 with the win.
GAME TWO
Calvin 7, Anderson 2
Calvin scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth to pull away for the win. Duong had an RBI single in the third and later scored after stealing third and scoring on an Anderson error. In the fourth, Duong doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs.
Senior Addi Warner (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) had a two-run RBI single in the fourth as well.
Duong went 2-for-4 with three RBI's while Warner went 2-for-3 with three RBI's. Gaastra also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Freshman Zoe Hazelhoff (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) went the first five innings to pick up the win, upping her season record to 8-2. Sophomore Maddy Meredith (Portland, Mich./Grand Ledge HS ) closed out the game by tossing two innings of shutout relief.
NEXT UP: Calvin will host the University of Chicago in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday with game one set to start at 3 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
