Calvin Men's Lacrosse Topples Alma

Box Score

ALMA, Mich. – The Calvin men's lacrosse team picked up its second win in a row, defeating Alma 11-6 on the road Friday night.

The Knights (8-8 overall, 2-3 MIAA) led 2-0 after one quarter of play behind first quarter goals from freshman Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) and senior Jake Boender (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Alma tied the game 2-2 early in the second quarter before the Knights responded with three unanswered goals to build a 5-2 lead. Freshman Josh Moyer (Laurys Station, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic HS) scored back-to-back goals to give the Knights a 4-2 advantage and a goal by junior Ethan Curtis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) on a feed from senior Nick Dueweke (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) boosted the Knights into a 5-2 lead.

Alma scored in the closing seconds of the quarter to cut the Calvin lead to 5-3 at halftime.

Calvin used third quarter goals from Dueweke and senior Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) to lead 7-5 heading into the final quarter of play.

Senior goalie Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) then electrified the Calvin side with a goal on a shot from well beyond midfield that caught the Alma goalie out of the crease and found the back of the net. The rare Griffin goal gave Calvin an 8-5 lead.

Freshman Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Ca./Trabuco Hills HS), senior Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) and Moyer then added on to Calvin's lead as the Knights moved into a six-goal lead and cruised the rest of the way.

Moyer had three goals to lead the Calvin scoring charge. Dueweke had a goal and two assists. Sparling had a goal, an assist and seven ground balls while winning 10 of 13 faceoff opportunities. Senior Zach Stanley (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn HS) caused two turnovers on defense. Senior defenseman Hunter Stearns (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) had three ground balls and caused one turnover.

Griffin made 11 saves to go with his highlight-reel goal.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was another great team win," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "Both sides of the ball played well and really came together. Evan Griffin had another great day in between the pipes and kept us in it throughout the game when they went on short runs. Excited to build on this heading into the last regular season game next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host rival Hope next Friday at Zuidema Field at 7 p.m.
