Box Score 2 Calvin softball dropped both games in a conference doubleheader at home against rival Hope Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 loss in game one and a 4-2 loss game two.
Game 1
Hope 2, Calvin 1
Hope quickly came out of the gate in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead on an unearned run and had the bases loaded, but junior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, WI / Grafton) pitched the Knights out of the jam. Calvin was unable to answer in the bottom of the first as Hope led 1-0.
Both teams were held scoreless in the next three innings, until Hope added another unearned run to its lead in the fifth inning to make it 2-0. The Knights finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a sac fly from senior Addi Warner (South Bend, IN / Clay) that plated senior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Calvin was unable to score again however as Hope held on for the win.
Junior Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, MI / Kalamazoo Christian) and senior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Portage Northern each finished the game with two hits. Krause took the loss to fall to 10-5 on the year. She struck out seven and walked one while scattering six hits.
Game 2
Hope 4, Calvin 2
The Flying Dutch started game two by scoring three runs in first inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Knights. Calvin finally got on the board in the top of the third with an RBI double by freshman Taylor Sanborn (Midland, MI / Midland) to make it 3-1.
Calvin came right back in the top of the fourth with another run after an error by Hope to trail 3-2. The Flying Dutch responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 4-2.
The Knights had one last chance in the top of the seventh to extend the game. Calvin placed a runner on first with a lead-off single by Warner but a line drive by junior Kali Yant (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) was snared at first base for a quick double play. A ground out to second ended the game.
Warner finished the game with three hits while Biddlecome ended game two with two hits. Sophomore Maddy Meredith (Grand Ledge, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year.
UP NEXT: The Knights will host Anderson (IN) in a doubleheader on Monday, April 25 with game one starting at 2 p.m.
