GAME ONE
Trine 3, Calvin 0
Trine scored a run in the second and added two unearned runs in the sixth to claim a 3-0 game one win.
Calvin's Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a double as one of Calvin's four hits.
Duong belted her double in the third but was stranded in scoring position. She also walked in the sixth and later moved to third but was again stranded in scoring position.
Freshman Kennedi Pepin (Bourbannais, Il./Bradley Bourbannais) singled in the seventh, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt but was also stranded.
Junior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) went the distance for the Knights and took the loss, falling to 9-4 on the season. Krause struck out six and walked three while scattering five Trine hits.
GAME TWO
Calvin 7, Trine 4
Calvin gained a come-from-behind 7-4 win over the Thunder to gain a doubleheader split.
Trine scored three runs in the bottom of the third but the Knights choked off a key run at the plate on a relay throw from Pepin to Duong to senior Addi Warner (South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) to keep it a 3-0 game.
Calvin used an RBI single from Duong in the fourth to cut the gap to 3-1. The Knights then tied the game in the fifth with a pair of runs as freshman Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) drove in a run with a single to center and freshman Sage Mougin (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie HS) followed with a bunt single that scooted past a charging Trine infield to plate Pepin from third.
Trine (15-10 overall, 5-1 MIAA) regained the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth but Calvin answered back in the top of the sixth as Duong doubled to left and came home on a clutch two-out single up the middle by Warner.
In the top of the seventh, Pepin led off with a single and scored on wind-blown double to left by Sanborn to give Calvin its first lead of the game at 5-4.
Sophomore Aly Tanis (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian HS) ran for Sanborn and came home on an RBI single by freshman Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Duong then doubled to left to bring home Gaastra and give Calvin a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, senior centerfielder Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) opened the inning with a running snag of a sinking line drive to right-center for out number one. Trine put two runners aboard with two outs but a deep smash to the warning track in center was hauled in by Biddlecome on the run to close out the win for the Knights.
Doung and Warner both went 4-for-5 at the plate with Duong drive in two runs. Biddlecome went 3-for-4 at the dish.
Pepin, Sanborn, Mougin and Gaastra had two hits apiece. As a team, Calvin collected 19 hits.
Freshman Zoe Hazelhoff (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) went the first three innings. Freshman Maddy Meredith (Portland, Mich./Grand Ledge HS) went the final four innings to pick up the win, bumping her season record to 1-1.
COACHES COMMENT: "I am really pleased with how we competed across 14 innings today," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "In game one we got too many balls up in the wind couldn't manufacture any runs in a really tight pitcher's duel. In game two, I was pleased with how we kept fighting and grinding out late innings and getting the three-run lead going into the bottom of the 7th was huge for our energy and momentum. Maddy (Meredith) really got the job done in relief and our defense made some big plays behind her late in the game. Trine is a well-coached and disciplined team. To get the split on our home field was important to keep us in the mix in the MIAA conference race."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host the University of Chicago in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday with game one set for 3 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
