Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin men's lacrosse dropped a conference game Tuesday night, falling 11-9 to Trine University at Zuidema Field.
The Thunder (8-1 overall, 2-0 MIAA) came firing right out of the gate as they rattled off five straight goals to quickly gain a 5-0 lead. The Knights responded with two goals by Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI / Grosse Pointe South) and Josh Moyer (Laurys Stations, PA / Allentown Central Catholic) to only trail 5-2 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, Trine slightly outscored Calvin 3-2 to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. Seniors Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, IL / Wheaton North) and Chase Sparling (Novi, MI / Novi High School) each had a goal in the second quarter for the Knights.
The Knights had some energy out of the half and outscored the Thunder 3-1 in the quarter with senior Nick Dueweke (Clarkston, MI / Notre Dame Prep) scoring two goals and senior Jake Boender (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) scoring a goal as well.
Calvin only trailed by two with a score of 9-7 going into the fourth quarter and had momentum in its favor.
Trine responded in the beginning of the fourth with two goals to extend its lead to 11-7 with the game winding down. Calvin continued to battle back and with goals by Moyer and Sparling, the Knights trailed 11-9 with 5:16 left in the game.
The Knights continued to put the pressure on the Thunder in the remaining minutes of the contest but were unable to break through Trine's defense. Calvin falls to Trine with a final score of 11-9 and goes to 6-7 on the season and 0-2 in the MIAA.
Freshman Carter Sherman (Ada, MI / Lowell) finished with 10 saves in the net for the Knights.
