Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin men's lacrosse fell in a rain-filled game against Elmhurst with a final score of 13-7 on Wednesday evening at Zuidema Field.
It was a defensive battle in the first quarter as Elmhurst had a slight 2-1 advantage at the end of the first. Freshman Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI / Grosse Pointe South) scored the only goal for the Knights in the first quarter of play.
The second quarter started with the Bluejays scoring two quick qoals in the quarter to grab a 4-1 lead over the Knights. Junior Robert Miner (Littleton, CO / Columbine) closed the gap just before halftime with a goal to only trail 4-2 at the half.
Calvin began to battle back into the game by outscoring Elmhurst 3-1 in the third quarter thanks to two goals by freshman Nick Giffith (Geneva, FL) and another goal by Josh Moyer (Laurys Station, PA / Allentown Central Catholic). The Knights tied the game at 5-5 going into the fourth quarter.
The Bluejays came out with energy in the fourth as they took over and outscored the Knights 8-2 in the final quarter of play. Smith and senior Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, IL / Wheaton North) each scored a goal in the fourth. Calvin fell to 6-4 overall on the season with the defeat.
Senior Evan Griffin (Howell, MI / Hartland High School) collected 20 saves in the goal for the Knights on the evening. Senior Chase Sparling (Novi, MI / Novi) collected 6 ground balls and was 11-19 on faceoffs in the game.
COACHES COMMENTS: "I was really proud of the way we battled today," said head coach Dave Hoger, "We had a ton of energy and competed with a very good team. Everybody contributed and did their jobs and while the final outcome wasn't what we wanted; we learned a lot today. Excited to get back to work and prepare for our final non-conference game next week."
