GAME ONE
Calvin 3, Wheaton 1
Calvin used timely hitting and a strong complete-game pitching performance from junior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wisc./Grafton HS) to gain the game one win.
Krause tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing only one run in the seventh inning after the Knights had built a 3-0 lead.
Calvin grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third. Calvin loaded the bases and cashed in on a bases-loaded walk by junior Kali Yant (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS) that plated freshman Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Senior Hannah Biddlecome (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) then scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, Biddlecome singled, stole second and later scored on a single by Yant.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wheaton scored an unearned run on a throwing error and had the tying run at the plate when Krause was able to get out of the jam with a groundout to first base.
Biddlecome had a big game, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Yant also had two hits in the win. Krause struck out four batters.
GAME TWO
Calvin 3, Wheaton 2
Calvin gained the game two win in a contest that was limited to five innings due to time constraints inside the Rosemont Dome.
Calvin fell behind 2-0 after one inning of play but rallied with three runs in the top of the third and played scoreless ball the rest of the way to seal the win.
Biddlecome opened the third with a single and late stole second and then third base. With two outs, freshman Kennedi Pepin (Bourbonnais, IL / Bradley Bourbonnais HS) singled to left to plate Biddlecome. Sophomore Grace Glass (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) kept the inning going with a single to left.
Freshman Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) then stepped up and belted a booming double to center that brought home Pepin and Glass to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
Wheaton had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third but did not tie the game. The Thunder (9-5) went down in order in the fourth and were unable to score in the fifth as the Knights closed out the win.
Biddlecome was 2-for-2 at the plate while Glass was 2-for-3.
Freshman Zoe Hazelhoff (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) went the distance for the Knights to gain the win, upping her season record to 5-1. Hazelhoff allowed only two Wheaton hits while striking out two and walking two.
COACHES COMMENT: "Really happy with our results tonight against a good Wheaton program," said Calvin head softball coach Becky Hilgert. "Defensively we played pretty solid behind Kirsten and Zoe who did a good job of limiting Wheaton's offensive opportunities. Offensively we still need to execute with runners on base and at times, we were swinging outside ourselves instead of working to apply the proper adjustments. We need to continue to work on and grow in our mental approach and be more disciplined to make in-game adjustments quicker on offense. Overall, there were a lot of positives to take away from today."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Ohio Northern on Thursday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
