ATHENS, Ga. – Calvin claimed a dramatic 9-8 victory over Piedmont University Tuesday afternoon.

The Knights improve to 3-0 on the season. Calvin led 5-3 at halftime but saw the host Lions (1-3) score four unanswered goals to take a 7-5 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Calvin junior Robert Miner (Littleton, Co./Columbine HS) got the Knights back on track, ripping in a shot with 11:59 left and less than a minute later senior Nick Dueweke (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) tied the game 7-7 off a feed from senior teammate Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS).

The two teams jockeyed for the lead as the fourth quarter moved on and the Knights were able to gain the lead on a clutch goal from freshman Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) with 4:45 left to play. Miner scored an important insurance goal with 25 seconds left on the clock.

The goal proved pivotal as Piedmont scored one last goal with six seconds left as the Knights held on for the one-goal win.

Miner and Dueweke led Calvin with three goals and three ground balls apiece. Sparling had a goal, an assist and five ground balls.

Senior Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) also scored a goal for the Knights in the win.

Senior Evan Griffin (Howell, Mich./Hartland HS) had a strong game with 16 saves.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great team win today," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "We needed everybody and had to overcome some second half adversity. We are excited to rest up and prepare for Thursday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to the University of Dallas on Thursday with the game set to begin at 4 p.m. (CST).
