Calvin Men's Lacrosse Runs by Lake Forest

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin men's lacrosse picked up its sixth win of the season in the first home contest against Lake Forest with a final score of 13-9.

The first quarter of play was a defense battle for both teams, but the Knight came out with the lead heading into the second. A goal by freshman Josh Moyer (Laurys Station, PA / Allentown Central Catholic) and another goal by senior Jake Boender (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) gave Calvin a 2-0 advantage. Lake Forest answered with a goal of its own and the Knights gained a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

The offensive really started to pick up in the second as the Knights rattled off three quick goals by Moyer, Boender and junior Josh Newshouse (Grand Junction, CO / Palisade) to extend their lead to 5-1. The Knights went on to outscore the Foresters 4-1 the rest of the second quarter.

A goal by Chase Sparling (Novi, MI / Novi High School), Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI / Grosse Point South) and two by senior Drew Stoneburner (Wheaton, Il / Wheaton North) gave Calvin a 9-2 halftime lead.

In the third quarter of play, Lake Forest outscored Calvin 3-2 with the two goals coming from Stoneburner, and Calvin led 11-5 going into the fourth. The Knights quickly started out the fourth quarter with a goal from junior Ethan Curtis (Grand Rapids, MI / Forest Hills Northern) to extend their lead to 12-5.

Lake Forest scored two goals to cut into the lead, but Stoneburner added another goal to make it his fifth of the day. The Foresters tried to climb back into the game, but the lead was too large for the too comeback as the Knights held on to win 13-9. Calvin improves to 6-2 overall on the season.

Stoneburner finished with five goals on the afternoon while Boender and Moyer had two goals apiece. Sparling also collected 18 ground balls in the Calvin win. Senior Evan Griffin (Howell, MI / Hartland High School) finished the game with six saves and Calvin won 20-26 on the faceoffs.
