ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Calvin women's indoor track and field team had another record-breaking afternoon at the GVSU Big Meet at the Kelly Family Sports Center on Saturday.
Calvin's distance medley relay team of sophomore Delaney Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), freshman Cora Moore (Phoenix, Az./North Phoenix Prep), sophomore Jenna Allman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline HS) and senior Sadie Heeringa (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocked a school-record time of 11:49.21. The record surpassed the previous record of 11:54.92 set in 2009. The time is the second-fastest in Division III women's indoor track and field this winter.
Sall ran the opening 1200 meter leg in a blistering time of 3:35 and handed the baton to Moore who ran a solid 400 meter leg of 61 seconds. Allman ran the subsequent 800 meter leg in a career-best time of 2:19 leaving the closing mile run leg in the hands of Heeringa. Heeringa whirred through the closing mile leg in a time of 4:52 to allow the Knights to shatter the previous school record by more than five seconds and likely cemented a trip to the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships later in March in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In the 200 meters, senior Renee Miller (Marlette, Mich./Marlette HS) ran a season-best time of 26.95 while Moore did the same in the race with a time of 27.44.
In the weight throw, senior Waverly VerHill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Trinity Christian HS) took 13th with a throw of 47-11. Sophomore Jessye Vanden Akker (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) took 10th in the triple jump with a lea pof 34-0 3/4.
Calvin is scheduled to competed at the GVSU Tune-Up Invitational next Friday
