Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's basketball team remains on top of the MIAA standings after a 75-64 win at Trine Saturday afternoon.
Now owners of a nine-game win streak, the Knights improve to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the MIAA. The win sets up a showdown for first place for the MIAA lead next Wednesday as Calvin travels to rival Hope for an 8 p.m. matchup. The Flying Dutchmen are 9-2 in league play with a makeup game to be played at Kalamazoo Monday prior to Wednesday's rivalry rematch.
In its victory over Trine on Saturday, Calvin never trailed and took the lead for good in the opening three minutes.
Calvin led 34-28 at halftime behind 17 first half points from senior Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS). The Knights led by as many as 10 points in the first half and shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half to build a halftime lead.
The Knights maintained a small lead through the opening minutes of the second half before ripping off a 14-3 scoring run to build a 61-44 lead with 8:33 left capped off by a layup by senior Emmett Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
A driving baseline layup by junior Eli Sensenig (Grayslake Il./Westlake Christian Academy) put the Knights up 63-47 with 6:31 remaining.
Trine (15-8 overall, 8-4 MIAA) rattled off nine unanswered points however to cut the deficit to seven at 63-56 with 4:48 left.
Calvin came up with a key defensive stop and Morrison followed with a clutch jump shot to up the Knights up nine.
Trine never got closer than seven the rest of the way with Morrison scoring nine points inside the final 2:42 to seal the win.
Morrison finished with a career-high 33 points, marking his third 30-point performance in the last five games. Playing in his hometown state, he also dished out three assists and grabbed three rebounds.
Sophomore Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Il./Huntley HS) was also superb with 15 points, 8 boards, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Sensenig had 10 points off the bench. Senior Alec Fruin (Beloit, Wisc./Turner HS) had a strong defensive performance to go with six points, four steals and four rebounds. Warners had a big defensive performance inside while scoring four points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Calvin shot 52.6 percent from the floor and was 10 of 14 (.714) at the free throw line.
Trine was led in scoring by senior Nick Bowman with 24 points while Mitchell Geller had 12. The Thunder shot 45.1 percent from the floor but were only 60 percent (15 of 25) at the free throw line. Trine also turned the ball over 16 times.
COACHES COMMENT: "I'm really proud of our guys," said Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall. "I thought we had an amazing effort in a very tough environment today. This was a great college basketball game. Both teams came out punching but I thought we executed really well on offense and received contributions from everyone."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to rival Hope for an 8 p.m. contest next Wednesday at DeVos Fieldhouse.
