Calvin Volleyball Rolls Into MIAA Final With 3-0 Sweep of Adrian

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin volleyball team advanced to the final of the MIAA Tournament with a dominant 3-0 win over Adrian by the scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-12 in Friday's semi-final.

The Knights took firm control from the start, opening a 14-1 lead in the first set and never looking back. Calvin led wire-to-wire in the first and third sets, and only trailed by one (3-2) early in the second set before running away with that set, as well.

The Calvin defense finished with 53 digs and six blocks as it held the Bulldogs to -.108 attack efficiency for the match. Adrian finished with 23 errors against only 13 kills and hit a negative percentage on the attack in each of the three sets.

On the other side, Calvin hit .274 for the match, with Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) leading the way with 11 kills. Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) added 10 kills while Tori Roskamp (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) added six kills.

The Knights also had a big day on their serve, finishing with eight aces. Kelly Fritzsch (Oceanside, Calif./Tri-City Christian) helped put the second set away with three straight service aces, while Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) also recorded three aces to go with her match-high 29 assists.

Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led Calvin with 24 digs. Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) led the front row defensive effort with four blocks.

Calvin improved to 24-3 on the season with the win. Adrian fell to 13-10 in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "We were just trying to keep it together on our side of the next with having Heidi (Westra) come back and get in the flow again," Calvin head coach Dr. Amber Warners said. "Just trying to do the stuff on our side well, and I thought we did that. We served well, passed well, and blocked really well, so I'm really happy with the night.

NEXT UP: Calvin volleyball will host Albion College in the MIAA Tournament final tomorrow (Saturday, November 5). Albion, the three-seed in the tournament, advanced to the final with a 3-0 win over second-seeded Hope College on Friday.
