GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin volleyball team finished off the sweep of the MIAA regular season and tournament championships with a 3-0 win over Albion on Saturday night by the scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-20.
The Britons, ranked 22nd in the nation in this week's AVCA poll, entered the match off a three-set sweep of Hope College in Friday's semi-final round, but were no match for the fourth-ranked Knights in the early going.Â
Calvin jumped in front 6-1 to open the match and never trailed in either of the first two sets on the way to taking a 2-0 overall lead.
The Britons had no answer for
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian), who recorded 14 kills and three service aces in the first two sets alone to lead the Knights to the fast start.
Albion would battle in the third set and made Calvin work until the end, but eight more kills from Westra in the final set were enough to push the Knights over the top to secure the win and the tournament title.
The Knights finished the match hitting .345 as a team on the attack, led by Westra's 22 kills and
Alyssa DeVries' (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) 44 assists.
Tori Roskamp (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) chipped in with seven kills on the attack, while
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) tied for the team lead with 11 digs.Â
Calvin improved to 25-3 on the season with the win. Albion fell to 25-6 in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Heidi's a complete player," Calvin head coach Dr.
Amber Warners said about senior
Heidi Westra. "She can pass. She can serve. She hits and she blocks. We're not the same team without her, but at the same time, I think our players stepped up in her absence (last week) and they're playing better and better. I think we've got a really deep team."
