BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Calvin University volleyball team defeated Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 3-1 on Saturday morning by the scores of 25-27, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18 to close the NYU Tournament with a 3-0 record.
The Knights battled back from a 20-14 deficit in the opening set to take a 25-24 lead, but the Engineers bounced back to take the final three points and score a 27-25 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Calvin started to settle in for the second set and held off a late MIT rally to take the second set 25-23.
The Knights would roll from there, building big leads in both the third and fourth sets on the way to 25-18 wins in both games en route to a 3-1 overall win.
Calvin was consistent on the attack throughout the match, hitting .277 overall.
Maria Bos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the way with 17 kills and only one error as she hit .421 for the match.
Heidi Westra (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Timothy Christian) added 14 kills and five service aces, while
Alyssa DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished with 47 assists and four kills.
The 19th-ranked Engineers hit .382 in the first set and .321 in the second, but the Knights' defense held them to .095 in the third and .250 in the fourth game.
Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the back row with 14 digs, while Westra added 12 digs and four blocks.Â
The win moved the Knights to 15-3 on the season and added a second win over a nationally ranked opponent over the weekend (they defeated 10th-ranked NYU on Friday). MIT fell to 14-4 in defeat.
COACH'S COMMENT: "After a slow start we played very well most of the time," Calvin head volleyball coach Dr.
Amber Warners said. "We served well and played together. We are very excited to go 3-0 in NYC and now we can't wait to have some fun and explore the city."
NEXT UP: Calvin volleyball returns to MIAA play on Wednesday, October 12, when it travels to Olivet for a match scheduled to start at 6:30 PM.
